Brendan is a character created by David McCabe, loosly following his own life, to fulfil his dream of writing a book. The success of his first book, Pinkeens to Diddies, describing Brendan’s childhood, led to his second, ‘Brendan Afloat’, where he went to sea as an apprentice deck officer and book three, titled ‘Brendan Ashore’' continues the series where Brendan,unable to continue his sea going career, in the 1960's, goes to Liverpool, England to seek his fortune.

GROWING UP IN THE 1950’s
Brendan goes dancing, he meets girls, takes part in amateur dramatics and reads the lessons in church. At age sixteen he leaves school and travels the country in a broken down delivery van and a year later leaves Ireland to join the Merchant Navy
BRENDAN GOES NIGHT CLUBBING
What a hell of a night in 1957
With a roar of exhaust the large Chevvy car pulled away from the Blue Moon nightclub,Cape Town. South Africa in the early hours. With arms waving from the open windows and shouts of ‘goodbye’ as the lights of the Blue Moon faded into the darkness. Don shouted out over the roar of the engine.‘Bop and Spoon at the old Blue Moon. What a night we had!’ "Bop and Spoon at the old Blue Moon what a great night’. In unison the others with a roar all agreed, "Dance and spoon at the old Blue Moon." What a hell of a night.’
BRENDAN IN TAKORADI, GHANA
One particular trip which stood out on the many voyages Brendan made was when sailing into the port of Takoradi in the Gold Coast,,now known as Ghana, through errors of navigation his ship the Caltex Commander, a large tanker, full to the brim with a variety of high octane oils, ran aground on a reef.

‘Balikpapan was a little known port in the united states of Indonesia. The mystical Far East ------- Brendan brought Tims attention to the sound of aircraft engines. ‘Looks like a B-26 Invader Bomber advised Tim ‘Wonder what it’s up to? It’s flying very low… God Bren its bomb bays are open! It’s coming into attack Look it’s dropping bombs over the town .Wow it’s coming our way’ shouted Brendan ‘it’s machine gunning the oil tanks --- blimey Tim what do we do?’

Thinking the world a marvellous place, although he could do with a bit more money, he noticed a car headlights at the entrance to a road on his right. They’ll come out behind me was his instinctive reaction “God. No, it’s comin’ out fast. I’m going to hit it…” he screamed.
“Motor scooter accident, Meehaul, right leg quadriceps severed, severe bruising right leg, damage frontal part head, cut lips, in a state of unconsciousness. Name: Brendan Harris, male, early twenties.” “Thanks, George,” acknowledged Michael, the hospital orderly, to the two ambulance men. “It’s going to be a busy night. Where was this?”
